Respiratory infection caused by Mycoplasma pneumoniae.

Psittacosis caused by Chlamydia psittaci.

Trachoma caused by Chlamydia trachomatis although the infectious agents are not always eliminated, according to the immunofluorescence test.

Inclusion conjunctivitis caused by Chlamydia trachomatis can be treated with oral tetracyclines or with a combination of oral and topical agents. Recurrent fever transmitted by lice and caused by Borrelia recurrentis.

Oxytetracycline is also indicated for the treatment of infections caused by the following Gram-negative microorganisms:

Plague caused by Yersinia pestis.

Tularemia caused by Francisella tularensis.

Bartonellosis caused by Bartonella bacilliformis.

Bacteroides species.

Cholera caused by Vibrio cholerae (formerly Vibrio comma).

Campylobacter fetus (formerly Vibrio fetus).

Brucellosis caused by Brucella species (in conjunction with streptomycin). Because many strains of the following groups of microorganisms have been shown to be resistant to tetracyclines, sensitivity and culture testing is recommended.

Oxytetracycline is indicated for the treatment of infections caused by the following Gram-negative microorganisms when bacteriological testing indicates appropriate drug sensitivity:

Escherichia coli.

Enterobacter aerogenes (formerly Aerobacter aerogenes).

Shigella spp.

Acinetobacter spp (formerly Mima spp and Herellea spp).

Respiratory infections caused by Haemophilus influenzae.

Respiratory and urinary tract infections caused by Klebsiella spp.

Oxytetracycline is indicated for the treatment of infections caused by the following Gram-positive microorganisms, when the bacteriological test indicates appropriate sensitivity to the drug:

Upper respiratory tract infections caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae.

Skin and soft tissue infections caused by Staphylococcus aureus.

When penicillin is contraindicated, tetracyclines are alternative drugs in the treatment of infections due to:

Syphilis caused by Treponema pallidum and yaws caused by Treponema pertenue.

Listeriosis involving focal infections only caused by Listeria monocytogenes.

Clostridium spp.

Anthrax caused by Bacillus anthracis.

Vincent's infection (acute necrotizing ulcerative gingivitis) caused by Leptotrichia buccalis.

Actinomycosis caused by Actinomyces species. Long Term Treatment: In acne vulgaris and rosacea, oxytetracycline is useful in long term treatment. Auxiliary Treatment: In acute intestinal amebiasis, tetracyclines can be a useful adjunct to amebicides.
